For this month’s cover I’m passing the editorial baton to Francesca Beard who has written below some words to accompany our version of this Velvet Underground classic. We were both listening to The Velvet Underground as angsty teenagers, years before we met and formed ‘Charley Marlowe.’ Age 14, I was obsessed by Nico’s lugubrious phrasing and the layered transparencies of her voice. I imagine Piers must have been fascinated by the dead-pan experimentation, Cale’s viola drone, the use of story and poetry. We thought about covering other songs off that debut album – Sunday Morning, Venus in Furs, Femme Fatale. In the end, it was always going to be ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror.’ I loved doing this – everything seemed to just flow. We recorded it so quickly that I kept trying to add bits and Piers humoured me by letting me try all sorts of things, but I hear from this mix that he left them out and of course, he’s right. My favourite part is the guitar – the song is instantly recognisable, but this version is totally Piers.
